Why injured trees don’t bleed to death

Researchers used a powerful new microscope called the 4Pi to examine the nanostructures inside microscopic structures known as bordered pits within wood fibre cells. Fluid sap passes from one wood fibre cell to another through these bordered pits. Each pit also contains a mesh of nano-sized cellulose fibres radiating out from a central region. When a tree is injured, the torus and part of the mesh-like membrane will shift from the centre of the pit to one side so as to seal the pit’s opening.
