Via Science Is Awesome

Scientists will use 10 km-long drill pipes to drill to the mantle, which is a 3000 km-thick layer between the crust and the core. The mantle is made of slowly deforming rock and makes up about 84% of the Earth’s volume. The international team hope to bring up the first ever fresh samples and aid in our understanding of the origins and evolution of our planet.
